Why no Golden Visa fee table includes the medical test

Every Golden Visa quote we have compared on this site has the same hole in it: the medical fitness test appears as one round number, or it does not appear at all. That matters because the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive published tier for the same certificate is AED 770 per person, and everyone aged 18 and over on the application pays it. This guide sets the UAE Golden Visa medical test cost against the schedule Dubai Health Authority actually publishes, tier by tier, and we took the numbers from DHA's own service catalogue rather than from a provider's summary.

The silence in the permit fee tables is structural rather than sloppy. The Golden Visa is a residence permit, and the medical fitness certificate is a condition of holding any UAE residence permit rather than a feature of this particular route. The official portal puts the requirement on the residence visa itself: applicants who are 18 and above must undergo a medical test to prove they are medically fit, and a medical fitness certificate is listed among the required documents for dependants above 18 years.

So the residency authority charges for the permit and a health authority charges for the certificate, and neither publishes the other's number. GDRFA Dubai's golden residence lines come to AED 1,640 before the stated per-year increase. The ICP's renewal schedule is AED 100 application, AED 100 per year of the permit and AED 100 smart services. Neither includes a dirham of screening, and neither is wrong to omit it.

What Dubai Health Authority publishes, tier by tier

DHA publishes its medical fitness prices in the Medical Fitness Centres Service Catalogue, which is the closest thing to an official price list this cost has. The catalogue states the legal basis plainly: under Law No. 7 of 2008 and Decree No. 5 of 2016, a medical fitness certificate confirming freedom from communicable diseases must be issued for new applicants or residents of Dubai for the purpose of issuing or renewing their residence visa.

The prices are structured entirely around speed. The certificate is the same document in every tier; what changes is how long you wait for it. The regular service is AED 250 at a stated 24 working hours. The express service is AED 700 at six working hours. The VIP service is AED 1,020 at two working hours. The Smart Salem centre is listed separately at AED 700 with a 30-working-minute turnaround, and the Tawajod service, which brings the test to a location of your choosing in Dubai, is AED 1,020 and available at the Al Muhaisnah centre only.

Household domestic staff sit on their own lines at AED 300 regular and AED 750 express, with the catalogue noting an extra AED 50 added to the package for the pregnancy test. Two footnotes are worth reading twice. Delivery times are counted during official working hours, so a Thursday afternoon express booking is not a Thursday evening certificate. And the published fees do not include typing fees, which is the line that most often turns a quoted AED 250 into something else at the counter.

The AED 700 figure most quotes use is a speed tier

Search for what a UAE Golden Visa medical test costs and the number that comes back most often is AED 700, usually with nothing attached to explain it. Set against DHA's schedule that figure is easy to place: it is the express six-working-hour tier, and it is also exactly what the Smart Salem centre charges for a 30-minute result. Smart Salem's own site quotes AED 700 and states results in 30 minutes, which is a useful sign that the catalogue lines are still the live prices rather than a stale document.

That leaves a decision worth making deliberately rather than by default. Paying AED 700 instead of AED 250 buys hours. It does not buy a better certificate, a faster permit, or a different outcome. For an applicant already several weeks into assembling a nomination letter or a property valuation, 24 working hours is rarely the binding constraint. For someone in the country on a short trip with a flight booked, it plainly is.

Across a family the arithmetic stops being trivial. A couple with two adult children pays the medical four times: AED 1,000 at the regular tier, AED 2,800 at the express tier, AED 4,080 at VIP. Nobody in that household gets a different visa for the extra AED 3,080. Ask any provider which tier their package assumes, because the choice is theirs and the cost is yours.

What the screening actually looks for

The test is narrower than the phrase medical fitness suggests. The official portal frames the requirement as freedom from communicable disease rather than general health: foreign nationals need to be free of all forms of communicable diseases to obtain work and residence permits. Nobody is assessed on blood pressure, weight, or fitness in any ordinary sense of the word.

Some occupations carry extra screening. The portal lists workers in nurseries, domestic workers including housemaids, nannies and drivers, food handlers and workers in restaurants and cafes, workers in salons and beauty centres, and workers in health clubs as categories that must also test negative for syphilis and hepatitis B, with female domestic workers additionally required to test negative for pregnancy. Most Golden Visa applicants fall outside all of those categories. A household applying together may not.

Tuberculosis is handled differently by emirate, and the portal is explicit about it: the emirate of Abu Dhabi screens foreign nationals to detect pulmonary tuberculosis by a chest x-ray, and the emirate of Dubai does not. A 2016 Cabinet Resolution then adds that all resident expatriates renewing their residence visas have to undergo TB screening. Where scars, active TB, or drug-resistant TB are found, the portal states that a conditional fitness certificate is issued and a residence visa granted for one year, with treatment taken in the UAE.

A conditional certificate with a one-year visa is a published outcome rather than a rejection, but it changes the term of the residence granted. Anyone with a TB history should raise it with the authority or a qualified adviser before applying rather than meeting the consequence at the counter.

Abu Dhabi and the northern emirates screen under different bodies

Dubai's schedule is the best-published one, which is why it dominates search results, and it is also the one least likely to apply to you if your permit is not a Dubai permit. The official portal routes the service through Emirates Health Services for the federal system and through Abu Dhabi's Disease Prevention and Screening Centre for Abu Dhabi, alongside DHA's own centres in Dubai.

That has two practical consequences for a cost estimate. The first is that a Dubai price list is not a national price list, and a provider quoting DHA tiers against an Abu Dhabi permit is quoting the wrong table. The second is the tuberculosis position above: an Abu Dhabi applicant is screened by chest x-ray for pulmonary TB as a matter of programme, and a Dubai applicant is not.

The rule here matches the one this site applies to permit fees. Work out which authority is issuing the residence, then price the medical against that authority's centres. Do not assume the emirate you live in is the emirate that will process you, particularly on routes nominated by a body sitting in a different emirate.

Where the medical sits in the whole residence stack

The medical is one of four costs living outside the Golden Visa permit fee, and seeing them together is the only way to sanity-check a provider's all-in number. The permit fees are published and knowable. The medical is published for Dubai. The Emirates ID is a separate application whose fee the official portal does not itself publish, pointing to the ICP instead. Health insurance is a commercial product priced by an insurer.

Two of those four carry published penalty figures, and both penalties are avoidable. An Emirates ID renewed more than one month after expiry attracts a late fee of AED 20 per day capped at AED 1,000, and the card can be renewed from as early as six months before it expires. Overstaying beyond the applicable grace period after a residence permit expires is charged at a standardised AED 50 per day.

Put beside the permit lines, the medical is not the largest number on the page, but it is the one most often missing from a quote and the one whose price the applicant can actually influence. That combination is why it is worth itemising rather than accepting inside a bundle.

Dependants pay separately, and renewal repeats it

The medical is a per-person cost and the threshold is age rather than role on the application. The official portal sets the test at applicants who are 18 and above, and lists a medical fitness certificate among the documents required for dependants above 18 years. A spouse pays it. An adult child sponsored on the same Golden Visa pays it. A child under 18 does not.

Renewal brings it back. The ICP's renewal of residency permits service lists a medical report and valid health insurance among the required documents across most residency categories, and the 2016 Cabinet Resolution requires TB screening for all resident expatriates renewing a residence visa. On a five-year permit that is a repeat cost roughly every five years; on a ten-year permit, every ten.

The awkward case is the holder who has been living abroad, which the Golden Visa expressly allows. The portal states that residents lose their visa after more than 180 days of continuous absence and that Golden Visa holders sit outside that requirement. The exemption protects the permit from cancellation, not from expiry, so the renewal trip still has to carry the medical, the biometrics, and a live insurance policy.

Health insurance is the requirement the medical keeps exposing

The pattern we see most often at renewal is a Golden Visa holder who has been outside the UAE legitimately for a long stretch, arrives for the medical and the biometrics, and finds the UAE health policy lapsed. Valid cover is what the file needs, and it is not something a screening centre can sell you on the day.

Arrange the UAE-licensed policy first, and treat travel medical cover as what it is: insurance for the trip, not for the requirement.
